Prayer of the Day:
Lord, help me to use my words for good. May my speech be filled with wisdom, love, and truth. Guard my tongue and guide my heart so that I may reflect Your grace in everything I say. Amen.
Six Keys to Using Your Words for Good
Words are powerful. The apostle James tells us that although ‘the tongue is a small part of the body’ it is extremely powerful (James 3:5). Each day, you have the potential to either destroy or build with your words. Here are six keys to using your words wisely:
1. Listen to Wise Words (Proverbs 4:1–9)
Wisdom helps you make decisions now that you will be happy with later.
Learn from others: ‘Lay hold of my words with all your heart… Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them’ (vv.4–5).
Value wisdom: ‘Wisdom is supreme: therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding’ (v.7b).
Live out wisdom: ‘She’ll make your life glorious. She’ll garland your life with grace. She’ll festoon your days with beauty’ (vv.8–9, MSG).
Application: Seek wisdom by listening, learning, and applying godly teachings in your life.
2. Hold on to the Words of Jesus (Matthew 24:1–31)
Jesus’ words stand the test of time: ‘Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away’ (v.35).
Be discerning: There will be false claims and deceptions (vv.4–5,23–26).
Expect challenges: There will be upheaval, persecution, and division (vv.6–12).
Stay steadfast in love: ‘The love of the great body of people will grow cold’ (v.12, AMP).
Application: Hold fast to Jesus’ words and keep your heart on fire with love for Him.
3. Discern Prophetic Words (Matthew 24:11–30)
‘Prophecy’ is a gift of the Holy Spirit, but we must distinguish between true and false prophecy.
Beware of false prophets: ‘They will appear and deceive many people’ (v.11).
Recognize false claims: Some will say, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ (v.23), but they are deceivers (v.24, MSG).
Trust true prophecy: Jesus affirms the words of prophets like Daniel and Isaiah (vv.15,29).
Application: Seek discernment and test every word against Scripture.
4. Speak Life-Changing Words (Matthew 24:14)
The gospel is powerful and has the ability to transform lives.
Share the good news: ‘And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world… and then the end will come’ (v.14).
Trust in its power: ‘I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes’ (Romans 1:16).
Application: Use your words to spread hope and transformation through the gospel.
5. Avoid Speaking Empty Words (Job 35:1–37:24)
Elihu spoke with arrogance and falsehood, demonstrating how words can be misused.
Recognize empty talk: ‘Job opens his mouth with empty talk; without knowledge he multiplies words’ (v.16, MSG).
Understand the impact of words: Our words have power, and careless speech can cause harm.
Application: Speak with wisdom, truth, and purpose.
6. Put God’s Words into Practice (Job 37:4–13)
God’s words are powerful and life-changing.
Trust in God’s voice: ‘The words of God are like manna from heaven, and water in a desert.’
Live by His truth: ‘The Lord is about to speak… What a relief!’
Application: Let God’s words guide your speech and actions every day.
Overall Takeaway:
Words have the power to build or destroy—choose wisely.
Listen, discern, and apply wisdom in your speech.
Hold fast to Jesus’ words and share the gospel with love.
Lord, may the words I speak today be guided by Your Spirit. Let my speech reflect Your wisdom, love, and truth. Help me to put Your words into practice and use them to encourage and uplift others. Amen.
